Research Interests

The material URu2Si2 has been a subject of long-standing interest since the discovery of a phase transition at 17.5 K, 30 years ago. Initially thought to be an antiferromagnetic transition, the small antiferromagnetic moment of 0.03 μB that arises in this material is far too small to account for the large specific heat jump. Three decades of research have failed to determine the order parameter, leading to this phase being dubbed the “hidden order” phase.

Neutron scattering has played an important role in determining the properties of the hidden order phase. For example, within the paramagnetic phase above the transition, inelastic neutron scattering measurements observed gapless, weakly dispersing features that become gapped and more intense in the “hidden order” phase. It was determined that the gapping of these excitations results in an entropy change of sufficient size to account for the specific heat jump. Thus, it has been cited as a possible “signature” of the hidden order state in neutron scattering experiments. Additionally, neutron scattering is highly sensitive to conventional magnetic orders that arise when the system is perturbed (with magnetic field, pressure, etc).

My work on URu2Si2 focuses on the elastic and inelastic neutron scattering signatures of the “hidden order” phase across various transitions driven by temperature, chemical and hydrostatic pressure, and magnetic field, in an effort to understand the connection the missing order parameter has to other magnetic symmetries.

Magnetic f-electron systems are a rich source of unconventional ground states due to the interplay of various interactions, often mediated by the conduction electrons. This results in effective masses of the conduction electron-specific heat being 10-100 times that of a conventional metal. Thus, while metallic, these systems display vastly different properties from ordinary metals.

These strongly correlated systems that exhibit rich phase diagrams and a range of quantum phase transitions. As these materials often have very small magnetic moments, they are very sensitive to perturbations, including applied pressure, applied fields, and the introduction of impurities. This can be seen in the well-studied Ce-115 family of materials, where fairly modest pressures induce a quantum phase transition, and where magnetic-field induced ordering produces a different ordering wavevector than at ambient conditions.

My research on f-electron systems focuses on the effect of various crystal structures in Ce-based compounds. The Ce-115 family hosts CeIn3 layers interlaced with In2 layers, in a quasi-2D arrangement. Newly synthesized compounds of the form Ce-218, Ce-127, etc, are able to tune the structure with respect to this dimensionality. Neutron scattering plays a key role in understanding the magentic interactions in these systems.

Graphene has attracted much attention for potential device applications, as 2D materials hold much promise as candidate spintronic devices. This requires semiconductors that possess ferromagnetic properties, particularly those that can be manipulated into one- or two-dimensional forms, so much work has also focused on dilute magnetic semiconductors, which offer a large range of magnetic properties. However, both classes of materials have limitiations. In an effort to overcome these limitations, there has been an emergence of research into the much less common spintronic candidate: intrinsically ferromagnetic semiconductors.

One of the most interesting possibilities involves the creation of robust, single-layer magnetic semiconductors. Intriguingly and counterintuitively, the Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic semiconductors CrTX3 is predicted to increase in single layers compared to the bulk, and to increase even further when the layers are strained. This motivates a better understanding of the bulk properties as well.

My research has involved measurements of CrSiTe3, and more recently, CrGeTe3 using neutron scattering. Understanding the bulk magnetism and quasi-2D nature of these materials has helped guide theoretical predictions of the monolayer behavior and potential device properties. I am also interested in the broader range of quasi-2D semiconducting ferromagnets and their potential for future devices.
